Message: COOS RIVER ECHOES - BY CHARLOTTE L. MAHAFFY PAGE 211 JESSE J. OTT, a veteran steamboater and also a farmer, was a son of Missourians, James Pasteur Ott and his wife Elizabeth Schappers. He came in 1890 with his mother and brother Samuel to the Allegany area, where his five uncles, The Schappers, were engaged in logging. Jesse is a member of the Masonic Lodge and of the Scottish Rite. He is a Knights Templar and a Shriner. His talented wife Florence is a daughter of the pioneer riverboat captain, C.E. Edwards. The Otts have lived fifty some years in Allegany and are known as dedicated leaders in their community. Florence has always been eminent in church work. Affable Florence and Jesse celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary with a joint reception when their granddaughter Joy Smith married Stanley Rucas, June 27, 1957, at the Coos Bay Methodist Church. The Otts are the parents of Harold, Doris (Mrs. Percy) Calhoun, Joyce (Mrs. Wilmer) Gault, Carol ( Mrs. Harold) Smith, and Keith. There are nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Jesse went to work in 1906 for his father-in-law, a veteran riverboat captain. He had been on the river almost continously, operating his own boats until 1948 at the time of the last riverboat. There was a time when Jesse operated riverboats with his brother-in-law Captain Herman Edwards. This was prior to his partnership with James Nowlin. In later years Jesse's son Harold became well-known as a boat captain. Jesse held contracts to transport North Fork children to the old consolidated school and for carrying U.S. Mail to those living on the North Fork and at Allegany. Storms would come, often bringing high water and freshets. Sometimes there was ice and now and then mechanical difficulties, but Captain Jesse and his crew never failed in leaving the daily U.S. Mail at the family wharf for those who lived along the North Fork. |

!WILLIAM E. McELWAIN FAMILY Mr. and Mrs. William E. McElwain moved from Burton, Kansas, to Mooreland and settled on a section of land one mile north of Mooreland in December of 1909. Three of their children, Wm. E. Jr., Alice and Floyd, and two grandchildren, Veda and Verdie Gordinier (children of their deceased daughter, Elizabeth Gordinier) accompanied their parents and grandparents.
The horses, cows and furniture were moved in a box car on the railroad. The first night or two, the McElwains stayed in the Bryan Hotel at Mooreland. At their new home, the first thing William McElwain did was to build a large barn, red with white trim. The three bedroom, two story house, was fairly new.
Mr. McElwain was one of the first farmers to have a Delco lighting system put in the house and barn, and one of the first to have a tractor. He farmed a section of School Land about two miles southeast of Mooreland, near the Dexter land. To cut wheat, he had a header which was pulled by six, eight or ten horses and driven by his son, Wm. Jr. He raised hay and had a hay bailer. He also raised corn, maize, hogs, chickens and turkeys.
In this picture of Mr. and Mrs. William McElwain, the youngest child, Floyd, is shown in thepicture on the wall. The lamp was a wedding present of the mother of Veda and Verdie, and Verdie still has it. She also has the two chairs the grandparents are sitting on, the small gold picture frame on the stand table, and the scarf on the table which had drawn work done by her grandmother, the tin type (round) picture of her deceased mother, and the black glass picture of her deceased mother and her mother’s deceased sister (Verdie), Verdie Gordinier was named after.
William E. Jr., married Margaret Bates of Hutchinson, Kansas, and moved to the Barn’s farm northwest of the McElwain farm. He died about four years later and the oldest son, Sam, moved to Mooreland and lived on the Dail farm northwest of the McElwain farm.
Alice, the McElwain’s daughter, married Harry B. Hall, son of Dr. and Mrs. Hall of Mooreland. She is now in her 80’s and lives in Boise City, Oklahoma.
Floyd, the McElwain's son, married Lila Hoover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.. John Hoover. Floyd is living in Stillwater and is a eighty years old.
Veda Miller, one of the granddaughters lives in Hutchinson, Kansas. Verde Jones, the other granddaughter, lives in McAlester, Okla. Mr. and Mrs. McElwain moved to town in 1928 and Mr. McElwain passed away in 1933. Mrs. McElwain passed away in 1958.
