1280. David Benton Ott (Nancy Williams Ferguson , Nancy Rand Pegram , Edward , Daniel , Daniel , George ) was born on 10 Mar 1842 in Middleburg, Clay Co., Indiana. He died on 30 Oct 1920 in Tropic, Garfield Co., Utah.

The following is from Heartthrobs of the West, Vol. 10:

"Duncan's Retreat was a small settlement located on the north bank of the Rio Virgin, about four miles east of Virgin City, three and one-half miles west of Grafton, and fifteen miles east of Toquerville. It was first settled in 1861 by Chapman Duncan and others, and during that and the following year, some fertile lands skirting the river were taken possession of, but these good lands were soon washed away by the action of high water in the Rio Virgin, and most of the settlers became discouraged and moved away. Other settlers moved in until the place contained about a dozen families, who built their first log cabins where the village of Duncan's Retreat later was built. The name of the place was suggested from the fact that the first settler, Chapman Duncan, retreated to other parts of the country after the floods during the winter of 1861-1862. In 1864, William Theobald was placed over the group as Presiding Elder at Duncan's Retreat. In 1866, the place was temporarily vacated because of Indian troubles, but re-settled in 1868. After the resettling, William Martindale presided in the little settlement for some time; he was succeeded by Joseph Wright, who died in 1873, and was succeeded in the branch presidency by Samuel Stansworth, who was succeeded by Moses Gibson (Moses W. Gibson), who was succeeded by David B. Ott, who in 1888 was succeeded by William Wright. In April, 1891, Duncan's Retreat was a small branch of the Virgin Ward, and as most of the settlers moved away because of continued floods, which washed away their lands, the place was abandoned. In 1930, nothing was left of Duncan's Retreat except fragments of the foundations of one or two houses, and three pear trees, still bearing fruit. The present federal highway passes directly over the site where formerly stood the Duncan L. D. S. meeting house.

In the early summer of 1864, Joseph Wright, a cattleman and butcher by trade, who lived at Duncan's Retreat, a small hamlet on the Virgin river about three miles due east of Virgin City, sent his son, William, and another young man, David Ott, both in their early twenties, to the coast over the route through Las Vegas, Nevada, and on through San Bernardino to the coast. They were to purchase a thresher consisting of a separator and the horsepower motor. What an adventure for two young men to travel over five hundred miles, alone over deserts, through canyons and over mountain passes infested with Indians. They had to go by pack train because they would each have to drive a part of the threshing machine home. They had to take six animals with them because it would need two teams to pull the separator over the two mountain passes and one team on the horsepower machine."

David married Hannah Normington ¹ daughter of Thomas Normington and Maria Jackson on 22 Oct 1865 in Duncan's Retreat, Washington, Utah. Hannah was born on 10 Aug 1849 in Burnley, Lancaster Co., England. She died on 23 May 1917 in Tropic, Garfield Co., Utah. She was buried on 25 May 1917 in Tropic Cemetery, Tropic, Garfield Co., Utah.

Charles married Sallie Lucy Ogburn daughter of Marcellus Henry Ogburn and Mary Jane Masten on 18 Feb 1897. Sallie was born ¹ on 4 Nov 1871 in North Carolina. She died on 18 Apr 1942.

Sallie's grandfather, James E. Ogburn became the first pioneer tobacco manufacturer in Forsyth Co, North Carolina. James brought the first tobacco press into Forsyth Co - it was operated with a wooden screw for making plug tobacco.

He is shown on the 1907 Census of Confederate Veterans in Winston Co., Alabama with the following information: Present Post Office address: Tavern, Alabama; born 21 Sep 1844 at Summerfield in Guilford County, North Carolina; first entered the service as Private on 15 Apr 1862 at Greensboro, North Carolina in 45th North Carolina Infantry, Company C and continued until 3 Jul 1863, when I was captured at Gettysburg and remained a prisoner five months. Re-enlisted as Private on 1 Dec 1863 in 45th North Carolina Infantry, Company C and continued until captured at or near Washington; remaining a prisoner until the surrender. No papers.

On the 1860 Census he is identified as Leonadus. The 1900 Census shows that Mary has had 10 children with 6 living while the 1910 Census shows Mary has had 9 children with 6 living. The 1910 Census shows the couple have been married for 43 years. In 1910, Rebecca, Effie and Martha are living in the home.

Apparently the family moved to Henderson Co., Texas about this time because we find the following item in the December 22, 1910 edition of the Athens News.
Mr. A. L. McMichael, late of North Alabama, is another new addition to the citizenship of Henderson county. He is the father of W. A. McMichael of the Ash community. Mr. McMichael called Wednesday morning and subscribed for the Review. This is one good quality of new comers. They nearly all take their county paper. They have been used to the custom and don't care to break it. A person that does not take and read his county paper is ignorant of the doings and proceedings of his county and shows his indifference to the duties of good citizenship.

Allen married ¹ Mary Bullock daughter of Finley T. Bullock and Sarah Wheeler on 14 Jun 1866 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. Mary was born ^{2, 3} in Sep 1843 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

On the 1860 Census he is identified as Jno. W. McMichael age 14 and is living with his parents, Archibald McMichael and wife Lucy Pegram.McMichael.

In 1880 he and his new wife, Sallie Pegram McMichael are found living with his aunt, Rhoda Brooks in Kernersville, Forsyth Co., North Carolina.

Also living in the home in 1880 is a Bittie Pegram (Peggran) identified as Aunt, age 64, that we have not yet identified.

In 1910 he is identified as William McMichael living in Forsyth Co. The 1910 Census shows the couple have been married for 13 years. Esther shows she has had 8 children, all living in the home.

John married ¹ (1) Sally Pegram daughter of James Fletcher Pegram and Annie Elizabeth Gates on 2 Mar 1880 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. Sally was born about 1860.

In 1870 he is found living with his father, Archibald McMichael where he is identified as Martin McMichael. On the 1860 Census he is found living with his father Archibald McMichael and wife Lucy Pegam Michael where he is identified as Joseph M.

His death certificate in 1924 identifies his father as Archibald McMichael.

Joseph married ¹ Martha Demaris Pegram daughter of Elijah Pegram and Nancy McMichael on 11 Apr 1889 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. Martha was born ^{2, 3, 4, 5} about 1847 in Guilford Co., North Carolina. She died ⁶ on 17 Dec 1919 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.

The 1900 Census shows the couple have been married for 11 years. Martha shows she has had 6 children, all living. The 1900 census incorrectly shows Elijah Walker Pegram as a son-in-law and Sallie M. Pegram and Mattie W. Pegram as daughters-in-law when they should have been shown as step-children of Martin McMichael since they are Martha's children by Alfred Walker To confuse matters more, the 1910 Census shows a daughter, Nonie, age 21 in the home. Martha still shows that she has had 6 children with 4 living. We are showing Nonie as found on the 1910 Census but it would appear that either the 1900 or 1910 Census has an error.

The 1900 Census shows she has been married for 21 years and has had 1 child. Lena and her daughter, May, are found living in the home of Thomas Ezell and her husband is not with her. At the time of the 1910 Census Lena and her gr. daughters are living with Lena's parents. In 1920 she is found with her 2 gr-daughters living with her mother. She is shown to be a married woman rather than a widow but we have not been able to learn where her husband might be.

The 1900 Census gives her birth date as Dec. 1860.

Orlene married ¹ Henry W. Winfree on 20 Feb 1879 in Guilford Co., North Carolina.
