LOCKHART is a native of this county, born September 5, 1830, being the eldest of five children of Eleazer and Susanna (Agan) Lockhart. His parents were natives of North Carolina, and came with their parents to Indiana when yet comparatively young, and here they were married and lived until overtaken by death. The father was a man of more than ordinary intelligence, and was one of the pioneer teachers of the county. He and wife were honored citizens and both now lie buried on the old Agan farm on Section 20. Their children were: Mary J. (deceased), Hannah E. (who married Samuel Francher), James A., Alfred and Nancy E. (deceased). James A. made his home with his parents until his marriage. His advantages were limited, though he secured in youth a rudimentary education. His father's death occurred when he was eight years old, and he being the oldest boy was forced to shoulder many responsibilities intended for older persons. He married Emily J., daughter of S. and J. Burton, October 20, 1852, and eleven children are the fruits of their union: William F. (deceased), Alfred, Henry, James A. (deceased), John, Sherman, George, Mary, Belle, Charley and Sophronia. Mr. Lockhart is a prosperous farmer, and a prominent citizen. He owns 340 acres of land (forty acres in Harrison County). He is a Mason, a Democrat, and he and wife are members of the Christian Church. Mrs. Lockhart, an amiable Christian lady, was born June 20, 1841.

) was born 1, 2, 3, 4 on 12 May 1835 in , Harrison County, Indiana. He died after 1900.
Taken from "Memorial Record of the Counties of Faribault, Martin, Watonwan, and Jackson, Minnesota". Lewis Publishing Company: Chicago. 1895. pp 303-304.
"George Wesley Ott, one of the representative farmers and early settlers of Martin County, dates his residence here from 1867, and during the years which have since come and gone he has always lived at his present place of abode in Fairmont Township. Mr. Ott is a western man, and his interests have always been identified with the Mississippi valley. He was born in Harrison County, Indiana, on the 12th of May, 1835, and comes of a family of German lineage. His grandfather was a native of Kentucky and his father, Ninrod Ott, was a native of the same state. There he spent the days of his boyhood and youth and learned the blacksmith trade, which he followed more or less for some years. He removed from Kentucky to Indiana, and after residing for a time in Harrison County went to Menard County, Illinois, locating in Petersburg, where he still resides, at a very advanced age. His work through life has been blacksmithing and farming, and he has led a busy and useful life. His wife, who bore the maiden name of Purlina Gum, was born in Kentucky, and is a daughter of Jehu Gum, a native of the same state and an early settler of Indiana. This worthy couple are the parents of eleven children, of whom our subject is the third in order of birth.
George W. Ott remained in the Hoosier State until sixteen years of age, and then accompanied his parents on their removal to Illinois, where he remained until coming to Minnesota. No event of special importance occurred during his boyhood and youth, which was quietly passed in his parents' home, midst play and work. He was reared to agricultural pursuits and has made that occupation his life work. As before stated he arrived in Minnesota in 1867, and located upon the farm which has since been his place of residence. He raised the first crop ever cultivated upon the farm, and with characteristic energy began to transform the wild land into rich and fertile fields. He now owns 230 acres, of which 100 acres is under the plow, the remainder of the land being pasture and meadow. In connection with general farming he carried on stock-raising, and keeps on hand a good grade of cattle, horses, and hogs.
In Menard County, Illinois, Mr. Ott was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Haden Parker, who was born in Kentucky, and during her early girlhood went with her mother to Illinois. To them have been born three children, all sons,--Horatio Seymour, Jesse Monroe and George Henry: and the family circle yet remains unbroken. They have a wide circle of friends and acquaintances throughout the community and the Ott household is the abode of hospitality.
In political connection Mr. Ott is a Democrat, supporting by his ballot the men and measures of that party, but, though he takes an active interest in political affairs as every true American citizen should do, and keeps well informed on the issues of the day, he has never sought or desired political preferment. In his business dealings he has been very successful. His life has not been passed midst scenes of excitement, but following the even tenor of his way he has, by his straightforward dealing and honesty, won the confidence of all with whom business or social relations have brought him in contact, and has gained a comfortable competence, being now numbered among the substantial citizens of the community."

JESSE F. GUM, who throughout his business career followed farming, winning both success and an honorable name, was born upon a farm near Tallula, Menard county, November 29, 1834, his parents being Jesse and Mary (Dills) Gum, both natives of Kentucky, whence they removed to Illinois at an early epoch in the development and improvement of the county. They settled upon a tract of wild land, the father becoming the owner of a tract of twelve hundred acres, which at his death was divided among his children. Indians were still found in this part of the state at the time of Mr. Gum's arrival, and every evidence of pioneer existence was seen. The land was largely uncultivated and the farm implements were crude, but stout hearts and willing hands overcame the difficulties of frontier life, and the labors of the pioneer opened up a district which is now one of the best agricultural sections of this great state. Unto Jesse and Mary (Dills) Gum were born twelve children but only one is living, Lydia Bell, a resident of Iowa. After losing his first wife, the father married Grace Flynn. One son, Charley Gum, was a soldier in the Mexican war and after being wounded was honorably discharged.
Jesse F. gum was educated in the public schools and was reared upon his father's farm, early assisting in the labors of plowing, planting and harvesting, so that he soon gained practical knowledge of the business which he determined to make his life work. He began farming on his own account after attaining his majority and always followed that pursuit. He was very successful, seldom, if ever, making a mistake in matters of business judgment and his careful control of his farming interests, his energy and diligence won for him a very desirable measure of prosperity. As his financial resources increased he invested in land and at his death was the owner of a fine farm of three hundred and thirty-three acres, which has since been divided among his children.
On February 11, 1858, Mr. Gum was married to Miss Marthena Ott, who was born July 24, 1839, in Harrison county, Indiana, a daughter of Nimrod and Perlina (Gum) Ott, and who were also natives of Harrison county, Indiana, and came to Illinois in 1852, settling in Menard County. Both have now passed away. They were farming people and lived a quiet retiring life. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Gum were born the following: Evaline, who died in infancy; Mary Agnes, who died at the age of three years; John Calvin, a resident of Petersburg, who married Cora Bell and has six children; Willie R., who resides on the home farm and married Elizabeth Davis, by whom he has six children; Etta, who married John Aishie, a carpenter of Pittsburg, Kansas, and has two children; Lucinda, who married Samuel Greenwald, a farmer living near Curtis, Illinois, and has one child; Martha Anna, who was married September 29, 1903, to Oliver A. Carman, a carpenter and contractor of Petersburg; Charles and Preston, who died in infancy.
In his political views Mr. Gum was a Democrat but had no aspirations for public office, preferring to devote his time and attention to his business affairs, in which he met with signal success. He died October 18, 1884, his remains being interred in Grove Hill cemetery. He was a member of the Baptist church, while his wife belongs to the Christian Church. His interest in all matters pertaining to the material upbuilding and the intellectual and moral advancement of the community was deep and sincere, and while he never attempted to be a leader in public movements, he gave his hearty co-operation and approval to many measures for the public good. His salient qualities were such as won him high regard and warm friendships and thus his memory is cherished not only by his immediate family but also by many who knew him throughout Menard county.
