The notice of her death appeared in the Hyde County, Messenger as abstracted by Kay Midgett Sheppard for the Hyde Co., North Carolina GenWeb page and reads:

"Mrs. Sill Gibbs, who had not been well for some time, died at Engelhard on May 31. She had pellegra. She is survived by her husband and six children. Interment was made in the Jones Gibbs graveyard with services conducted by Rev. A.B. Crocker. [IMO states Mary Louisa Gibbs was born in 1877 (no death date given). She was the daughter of Little John Pugh Midyette, Sr. and Amanda Pegram. She was the wife of Sylvester Burge Gibbs.]"

In 1860 there is a Thomas ?Byrnes living in the home. His age is 24, i.e. born about 1835 or 1836. This is probably the son of Nancy who was married first to Arthur Barnes but later married ___ Barham.

This is supported by the fact that that Arthur Barrum and wife Fanny (both born in North Carolina) are found on the 1850 Census.

It has been assumed that William Carroll, the eldest son of Martha Jane Shearin, was the son of Wyly (Wiley) McGee. However, Wiley McGee is single and living at home in 1850 but Martha Jane was not found with her family, indicating she had already married. There is nothing on the 1860 or 1870 Census to indicate otherwise but on the 1880 Census, William is clearly shown as William Carroll. The belief that he was the son of her first marriage to Arthur Carroll is supported by the fact that Arthur Carroll and wife Jane are living next to her brother, James Shearin on the 1850 Census of Obion Co. Also, the 1880 Census shows Meredith Carroll to be living next to Martha Jane and her new husband, David Maberry. Living in the home of Meredith Carroll is Fannie B. Carroll who is identified as his sister. However, she is clearly named Fannie B. Carroll and not Fannie B. McGee.

She is shown as HH on the 1870 Census with the same 4 children as shown on the 1860 Census, plus a daughter, Lucretia. Also, Merda's name is written differently on the 1870 Census and looks more like Meredith.

She shows she was born in North Carolina on both the 1860 and 1870 Census of Obion Co., Tennessee.

Martha married^{1, 2} (1) Arthur Carroll about 1849. Arthur was born^{3, 4} about 1824 in Tennessee. He died⁵ on 14 Jul 1855 in Obion Co., Tennessee. He was buried⁶ in Elbridge Cemetery, Obion, Tennessee.

They had the following children:
